ILLINOIS LEARNING STANDARDS

Pre test of each student to determine level of knowledge of music notation and music reading; use of the text to introduce basic notation concepts and expectations; continuation from that point; ear training; introduction of basic keyboard skills if needed

The textbook, “Elementary Harmony, Theory and Practice” by Robert Ottmann and the accompanying workbook; basic worksheets on pre-concepts as needed; computer drills on Theory Games; Concepts include pitch on the staff and keyboard; scales; key signatures; terminology; staff spellings; clefs; half steps and whole steps; scale degree names; major and minor scales; intervals; chords;  correct staff notation; consonance and dissonance in music; early pitch notation; note and rest values; time signatures; simple and compound beats; triplets, duplets and quadruplets; tonic and dominant harmony.

Worksheets and test on basic concepts;

Chapter tests; Homework assignments; computer drills; classroom participation; quizzes on ear training and keyboard harmony

Second Quarter

Continuation of above plus the study of harmony and complex rhythm patterns; ear training and sight singing; composition of a 64 measure original piece

Triads; tonic and dominant harmony; cadences; the melodic line; keyboard harmony; part-writing; the subdominant harmony; plagal cadences; inversions; non-harmonic tones; other chordal harmonies

Chapter tests; homework assignments;

Theory Games progress; final minimum 64 measure composition; classroom participation; quizzes on keyboard, ear training, and sight-singing
