Analogies/Vocabulary

 

 

 

Group Novel: Bridge To Terabithia

 

 

 

 

Daily Vocabulary and analogy study. Students will learn a new word each day and will also be given 2 analogies that will be discussed and explained.

 

 We will preview the story by looking at vocabulary, literary devices, and comprehension questions. We will then read and discuss story and complete questions and activities. Reading /comprehension strategies will be modeled and utilized.

In small groups, students will choose various novels and continue learning vocabulary, literary devices, and will answer comprehension questions within their individual groups. A project that reflects their knowledge of literary devices and the story will be completed at the end of each book. Teacher and student directed learning will take place during Literature Circle Time. Skill based lessons will be directed by teacher at designated points.

 Poetry Unit

Students will review styles found in various poetry. They will also be reading, studying, and writing poems from the following poets:. They will also study biographical information of each poet.

         Langston Hughes

         Carl Sandburg

         William Carlos Williams

         Robert Frost

         Walt Whitman

         Edgar Allan Poe

         Emily Dickinson

         Samuel Taylor Coleridge

         Various American poets

 In small groups, students will research chosen poet and his/her biographical information. They will create a display that reflects this information. Projects will be displayed for public.

Parts of the project:

         Biography of poet

         3 poems with student interpretation

         1 student generated poem in style of given poet

         Short paragraph explaining how poet’s life has influenced their poetry.

         Various artwork to enhance project
