Apples & Oxygen

  1. Carve apple doll face from firm, blemish-free GREEN apple. Let sit to dry one week.  Slice apple, show “meat” of apple…observe & draw.  Predict what will happen if it sits in air /draw.  Let one slice, sit.  Dip one in lemon juice, one in refrigerator, one in “fruit fresh”.  Observe each.  Which stayed white longest?  Discuss citric acid slows oxidation process.  Record results of plain apple slice on science journal page and label.

Making bread – how does it rise?

K-9 police unit assembly –

  1. Make bread using yeast and rapid-rise using orange soda / baking soda.  Discuss why bread rises (gas formed by-product of yeast and soda / carbonation), trapped air bubbles as dough solidifies.  More trapped air = “fluffier” bread.
  2. Canine police unit demonstration.  Observe and discuss how dog uses her senses to track and locate people or objects and how officer and dog communicate using hand signals and vocal commands.

“Rubber Bone” – students draw picture of jar with white vinegar in it and a regular chicken bone.  Discuss bone made of calcium…makes it hard…students feel & observe bone (won’t bend).  Students predict & draw what they think the acid (vinegar) will do to the bone.  Put bone in vinegar and cover w/lid for 3-4 days.  Observe.  Vinegar discolored, bone “rubbery”…acid dissolved calcium and removed it from bone, making it bendable…students feel, observe, record results.

Make and bake gingerbread cookies while showing / defining liquid, solid, soft, hard, etc.  Discuss how things look, feel, smell, taste, sound during process.
