Music Express---introduction to drumming and various styles of musical scores to facilitate music score reading; use of How To Read Music, music theory text one day per week with smaller groups; reading clef signs and the staff notation; introduction to the names of the staff lines and spaces and the kinds of notes;  introduction to recorder with Mr Alexander in small groups, once per week; music textbook---sing partner songs; sing as an ensemble; study American folk music;  study of how music is a part of our everyday lives; Music Instrument Jingo;  audition process explained and utilized for 2 roles in the high school musical, The Music Man

Classroom participation; weekly music theory worksheet checks;  completion of assignments; development of class collage for music in our every day lives.

Second Quarter

Continuation of first quarter study of music theory and recorder; study of October, November and December holiday songs and the cultures that affect bring about the music; begin the use of Music Ace computer program with each individual student; study of  Johann Stauss

Music Express; different kinds of music score reading; Music Textbook; How to Read Music; Music Ace computer program, ear training, reading the notes and the keyboard pitches;  the music of Johann Strauss; Christmas, Hanukah and Kwanzaa holiday songs----customs from other countries i.e. Spain, Germany, Mexico and England.  The history of caroling; The study of all  the kinds of notes and rests---writing and reading the same; counting rests and notes

Weekly music theory worksheet checks; quizzes on Strauss; classroom participation and completion of assignments; individual progress charts on Music Ace computer program---reading the notation and ear training for the various clefs

Continuation of music theory; continuation of recorder; continuation of Music Ace computer program; American folk songs; reading of music scores; study of Franz Liszt; introduction to other composers; learn songs relating to Martin Luther King; African American Spirituals; songs relating to Abraham Lincoln, George Washington , President’s Day and Valentine’s Day

How to Read Music, specifically rests, rhythm, beats, time signatures and beat values per note and rest; Music Ace, continuation at an individual pace of 2nd quarter; music textbooks and Music Express for the American folk music and the specific holiday songs as well as other songs introduced; Music Composer Jingo for introduction to new composers; Music Composer series and other materials for unit on Franz Liszt

Preparation of music for the spring concert based on the concert theme.’ Study of Spring music; continuation of the above topics i.e. recorder, music theory, Music Ace; patriotic music

How To Read Music ---concepts of pitch and putting all the above information together to read lines of music; Score reading with Music Express; music textbook for folk music and possible concert themed music; preparation of specific concert music as an entire group, both vocal and recorder; Continuation at individual pace of Music Ace—ear training, score reading and Keyboard

Participation in the spring concert; evaluation on level of preparation for concert; indiviual progress charts in Music Ace; weekly worksheet checks in music theory; test in on concepts learned in Music Theory; classroom participation
