LOCAL BANK SUPER-SIZES SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS . . . . . State Bank of Waterloo announces a scholarship competition that enables Illinois High School Seniors to enter a statewide essay-writing contest. A scholarship in the amount of $1,000 a year for up to four years of higher education will be awarded to the author of the best essay submitted to the CBAI Foundation.  This year, State Bank is also offering three local scholarships in conjunction with the CBAI competition.  The bank will award a Senior from Waterloo, Gibault and Valmeyer High Schools a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 a year for up to four years of post secondary education.  The same entries sent to the state competition will be judged locally.  The bank is working with these three High Schools to invite Seniors to submit short essays on the theme “What Sets Community Banks Apart From the Large Banks?”  Information on the contest is available at each of the High Schools or by contacting Mark Altadonna at State Bank by phone at 939-7194 or by email at marka@statebankofwaterloo.com.  Entries must be submitted to the bank by February 4, 2008.  The bank will then submit selected entries to the CBAI Foundation to be eligible for the statewide competition.

The U. S. Postal Service requests assistance with weather conditions.  Snow and ice make driving treacherous.  With winter storms dropping snow throughout the Southern Illinois mail delivery area, postal customers are requested to keep walkways, steps and all access areas to mailboxes clear of ice and snow for the safe delivery of mail.  Rural delivery customers are reminded that ice may make it difficult for mail delivery vehicles to stop at the mailbox.  Spreading sand and salt where the vehicle stops will assist the carrier with the safe delivery of the mail.  “As mail carriers do their best to make delivery to all addresses, it is important to remember their safety, said Postmaster Alice Wellen, we are also asking that customers be cautious as they make sure conditions are safe for their letter carrier.”  Customers on secondary roads may not receive mail if the roads are unsafe for postal drivers.  Local post offices will do their best to continue delivery uninterrupted under extreme weather conditions.
