EXCERPT FROM A COOK BOOK
COMPILED BY THE WOMEN’S GUILD OF THE ST. JOHN EVANGELICAL AND REFORMED CHURCH
OF VALMEYER IN 1950 . . . . . HOW TO PRESERVE A HUSBAND. . . . . Be careful in your selection. Do not choose too young, and take only such
varieties as have been reared in a good moral atmosphere. When once decided upon and selected, let that
part remain forever settled and give your entire thought to preparation for
domestic use. Some insist on keeping
them in a pickle, while others are constantly getting them into hot water. Even poor varieties may be made sweet, tender
and good by garnishing them with patience, well sweetened with smiles and
flavored with kisses. Then wrap well in
a mantle of charity. Keep warm with a
steady fire of domestic devotion and serve with the fruits of constant devotion
and milk of human kindness. When thus
prepared, they will keep for years. (We
hope this gets desired results, which is to help women who
have ‘em to keep ‘em and those who don’t have ‘em to get ‘em and keep ‘em well
preserved).
During 2009, the Village of Valmeyer will celebrate its Centennial. Valmeyer was officially founded as a Village in 1909. To commemorate this celebration, I am working
on the publication of a history book for the Village. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who
has any photographs of the Village throughout its history, from the earliest of
times to current years. Photos of
buildings, activities, holiday festivals, cultural events – whatever you may
have – all time periods and all events are important in documenting the history
of Valmeyer.
Photos will be borrowed long enough to scan and then will be immediately
returned to the owners. If you have any
information to contribute, please contact me at 935-2142 or by email at knobloch@htc.net. Thanks, Dennis.
