VALMEYER HAS MADE IT TO BROADWAY . . . In 1995 a group of theater students from Princeton came to interview Valmeyer residents about their experiences during the Flood of 1993.  One of those students, Cara Reichel took the information that was collected and turned it into a play.  The fictional story, set in Meyerville, Illinois details one community’s struggles against the rising tide of the Mississippi River that would wipe it off the map.  According to the website for the Prospect Theater Company which is producing the show, The Flood is mythic and moving, with a stirring score and deeply American characters.  It looks for meaning in cycles of devastation and rebirth, and finds that even in the wake of tragedy there are things that float.  This show has taken the stage at the Chernuchin Theatre at 314 West 54th Street in New York.  Following are some of the reviews which have appeared for the show . . . “a folk opera about how the events of 1993 affected the lives of the people in this typical American town.  The Flood is as chockful of melodies, ranging from solos and duets to soaring ensemble numbers, as it is peopled with characters whose individual problems and conflicts are heightened by the impending danger of the rising river.  With its substantive and original book and appealing to the ear and heart music, The Flood is a serious and seriously impressive musical. . . . . Awash in heartfelt emotions and glorious songs . . . surging anthems and rapturous hymns crown a collection of complex character songs that detail the inhabitants of this small Midwestern town.  The Flood is never better than when the townspeople speak or sing with one voice, the voice of America that can overcome any adversity given trust and time.”  The Flood will play through November 19, 2006.

The VALMEYER SCHOOL BAND is looking for donations of used instruments.  The band is growing by leaps and bounds and is in need of instruments for the students.  Check your closets and basements to see if you have any instruments lying around collecting dust.  You can donate them to the school for a tax deductible donation and they will be going to a good cause as well.  If you are able to help out with this contact Mike Alexander, the instrumental music teacher at the School.
