VALMEYER SCHOOL CALENDAR . . . . .

Wednesday, August 16 – First day of school for the 2006-2007 School Year.

FROM THE PAGES OF HISTORY . . .

Even though the Valmeyer Homecoming is no longer celebrated, memories of the event in years passed linger in the minds of area residents.  Young and old alike always anxiously awaited the weekend of the Valmeyer Homecoming.  This event was annually held on the third full weekend in July.  Valmeyer’s Homecoming was started by the Valmeyer Fire Department as a way to raise operational funds.  After the formation of the Valmeyer Fire Protection District the event was taken over by the Valmeyer American Legion and Auxiliary, and eventually the event was run by the Valmeyer Jaycees.  The 1993 Valmeyer Homecoming had to be cancelled because the community was in the midst of the flood fight, and the event was not held thereafter.

The following narrative is from the pages of the “Valmeyer Tribune” of July 16, 1940 with the title “ATTEND VALMEYER HOMECOMING” . . . . . Valmeyer is getting “dolled up” and will look presentable in time for the big annual Fireman’s Homecoming.  Kreischer’s and Althoff’s Stores and Bertram’s Tavern have installed neon lighting systems.  Schneider Pharmacy is painting the front of the store and will soon receive a large attractive drug and ice cream sign.  Niebruegge and Sondag have recently had a brand new paint job on their hardware store, and the John Niebruegge residence is now being painted.  We’re doing our best to make our Valmeyer sons and daughters proud to bring their friends home for an enjoyable day at the Homecoming . . . The Fire Department held its annual Homecoming meeting Tuesday night.  All arrangements are now complete.  The picnic is to be held on the same place, starting with a Parade Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. sharp.  The Parade will start at the Mill, East on Frederick, North on Fourth Street to Main, West to Park Avenue, to Frederick, to First, to School Street and into the picnic grounds.  The Sunday parade is at 1:00 p.m. sharp.  The float and parade committee reported many floats to be entered, and our parade will be bigger and better than last year.  There will be three bands and a drum corps. . . Last year we were short of seating space.  This year we will have plenty of seats, with room for everyone.  We have even added skeet shooting for the entertainment of our sportsmen.
