FROM THE PAGES OF HISTORY . . .
On August 30, 1930, representatives and attorneys of the Gulf Pipe Line
Company of Pennsylvania met with the Monroe County
Board of Commissioners for permission to construct a pipe line across the
County and cross the road between Valmeyer and Maeys Station. The County Commissioners
granted their permission and construction began on the new facility. . . . . .
. Even though the Pipe Line facility was located just outside the Village
limits of Valmeyer, it became a major part of the community. A pumping station was completed by the Gulf
Pipe Line Company in 1930. The pipe line
pumped petroleum from the oil fields in Texas
and Oklahoma to the refineries in Toledo, Ohio. The first Superintendent was Jess Vaughn,
followed by C. H. Morrison and A. J. Nabers.
Also during 1930, a pipe was laid through the County which reached all
the way from Texas to Cleaves and Toledo, Ohio. A huge engine and pumping station was set up
at the Valmeyer facility. There were 14
such stations along the line, every 50 miles as the crow flies. Counting from Texas, the Valmeyer station was number
seven. The engine and pumping plant took
up about two and a half acres of land.
It was situated on a forty-acre tract of land to accommodate the
enormous tanks which were necessary with an operation such as this. Crude oil was pumped from the oil fields to
the refineries through this line. The
engine and pumping room had to be kept immaculately
clean. The plant in Valmeyer was always
simply known as “The Pipe Line.” It once
employed fourteen men, but that number was reduced to five in 1966. At that time A. J. Nabers was the chief
engineer. Other employees were Aaron
Hawkins, Sylvester Maher, George Andres and Wesley Althoff.
