The Valmeyer American Legion Post 901 and the Auxiliary would like to invite you to their Memorial Day program at the Legion Home on Monday, May 30 at 9:30 a.m.  Those attending are invited to stay after the program for cake and coffee and to visit with family and friends.  Auxiliary members will also be selling poppies on that day.

 

The Valmeyer Senior Citizens will hold their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 25 at 1:00 p.m. at the Emergency Services Building.

 

The Valmeyer Lions Club is looking for new members.  New members can be ladies or men of any age.  If you are interested in becoming a member, you can contact Paul Nottmeier at 935-2746 or Bob Mohr at 935-2309.

 

An advisory committee is being formed to develop policies and regulations for the newly established Salt Lick Land Reserve.  This is the blufftop area over the Rock City Business Complex (the old Quarry property).  Positions on several other Village committees are also available.  If you are interested in serving on one of these committees please contact Village President Howard Heavner.

 

COME MEET YOUR NEW MAYOR AND FIRST LADY - - - HOWARD AND ELLEN HEAVNER - - - YOU’RE INVITED TO . . . THE 1ST MAYORAL INAUGURAL BALL . . . Sunday, May 29 from 8:00 p.m. to Midnight at Borsch Park.  This event is for any and all members of the Valmeyer community.  Bring beverages of your choice, appetizers or snacks to share and your lawn chairs.  The dress attire is casual or formal if you wish.  This would be the perfect opportunity to dig out your old prom dresses or leisure suits.  Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes.  The event will be held rain or shine.

 

The Village of Valmeyer is seeking a full-time employee for the maintenance of utilities and streets. Applicants must possess or be able and willing to obtain a CDL license, a Department of Agriculture Splray License, a “Class 4” sewer operator license, and a “Class D” water operator license.  Starting wage will range from $10 to $13 per hour (depending on relevant experience) plus insurance and retirement benefits.  Village residency is required.  The Village of Valmeyer is an Equal Opportunity Employer.  Applications may be obtained at the village office or by calling 618-935-2131.  A resume containing relevant experience and references should accompany the application.  Applications will be received until May 31, 2005, or until the position is filled.

 

Doug Jack, the Athletic Director at Valmeyer School, just instituted a new program.  As he enters scheduling for the different sports teams, it automatically updates a webpage at www.highschoolsports.net.  All of the Valmeyer School sports schedules / scores will be posted there.  Likewise any cancellations or schedule revisions will be available immediately.  Parents or any Valmeyer sports fans can sign up for an account on www.highschoolsports.net free of charge.  Once signed up, they will be allowed to choose the sports of interest to them.  When schedule changes or cancellations occur, email notifications will be sent to those registered.

 

WANTED - - - Clean up crew for two nights of the Valmeyer 4th of July Celebration.  Duties include walking the park grounds picking up trash and emptying trash cans into dumpsters.  Clean up can be done the night of the event, after midnight on Sunday night and after 11:00 p.m. on Monday night, or early the next morning, finishing up by 9:00 a.m.  Sunday night pay is $100 and Monday night pay is $150 (due to fireworks).  If interested, contact Sharon May at 935-2611 or Sharon.may@husch.com.

 

A MESSAGE FROM VALMEYER POSTMASTER ALICE WELLEN . . . . . Valmeyer has grown over the years.  One rural carrier can no longer carry the whole route.  We now have two rural routes.  The customers on East Hunters Ridge, East Harrisonville Drive, Empson Drive, South Cedar Bluff Drive and Megan Court along with the Senior Apartments will now be on the auxiliary rural route.  These customers will be getting their mail early each day.  The new carrier is Cheryl Mallon and will start delivering her route at approximately 10:00 a.m. each day.  Be sure to have any out going letters for her to pick up in your box before that time.  I am also asking each customer to be sure to use their complete address . . . i.e. East, West, North or South are required to be in your address. . . . . The Postal Service is sponsoring a Stamp of the Month.  The Breast Cancer Stamp is our featured stamp during the month of May.  Please come in and say you want to help stamp out Breast Cancer.  These stamps sell for 45 cents, with the extra 8 cents going toward cancer research.  Please come in and support your Post Office for a good cause.  Two years ago the Valmeyer Post Office was the high seller of this level office in the Gateway District.  I hope to see this success once again.  Thanks.

 

It’s almost Memorial Day, so you know July 4th is just around the corner.  Following is a tentative schedule of activities for the Annual Valmeyer Midsummer Celebration at Borsch Park.

                                                Volleyball Tournament beginning at 10:00 a.m.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE first annual “MELVIN J. FISHER HILLS AND HOLLOWS Half Marathon and 5K Run” to be held on September 24, 2005.  This event is being held in memory of Melvin Fisher, who lost his battle with cancer on September 1, 2004.  For thirty Melvin volunteered his time and efforts with many local organizations, but was probably most involved with the Valmeyer Fire Department and Valmeyer Active Firemen’s Association.  Through his efforts and encouragement, many firemen in the Valmeyer Department have completed or are enrolled in more advanced fire-fighting training than ever in the past.  The September planned event is dedicated to his memory.  Proceeds from the event will benefit the Valmeyer Active Firemen’s Association to continue training efforts for the department.  Sponsors – at all levels - are being sought to help make this event a success.  If you are interested in being a sponsor for the marathon, please contact Valmeyer Fire Department sponsorship coordinator Katie Schwarze at 314-575-0830.
