On Friday morning I participated in an
on-line interview with Canadian National Public Radio. They were interested in talking about
Valmeyer’s move to higher ground following the 1993 flood. On
February 16, 2003 the town of Badger, in central Newfoundland, Canada
(population 1,200), was inundated with flood waters after ice flows on the
Exploits, Red Indian and Badger Rivers caused the breach of a levee protecting
the town. Townspeople had only minutes
to react to the tragedy and many lost their homes and all of their
belongings. Fortunately no deaths
occurred from this disaster. Flood
waters remain in the community. The
Exploits River has now created a channel along the town’s Main Street. Many homes had water to their roof
levels. To complicate the problem, cold
temperatures have left many of the homes with basements and ground floors
frozen solid with ice. They may have to
use calcium chloride to melt the ice around their flooded homes and vehicles. Power had to be cut off to much of the
community, so many of their residents are now staying in temporary
shelters. Officials of the Canadian
government have talked with Badger officials about a possible relocation of the
town to higher ground. Please remember
the residents of Badger in your thoughts and prayers.
St.
John United Church of Christ in Valmeyer is sponsoring a CPR (cardio-pulmonary
resuscitation) training class on March 20 at 6:30 p.m. The class will include training to
resuscitate infants through adults. The
cost of the class is $30, however St. John has received a grant from the
Deaconess Foundation to cover $27 of the class fee for the first 30 people to
make reservations. This means you can participate in this CPR training
class for just $3 per person, if you are one of the first 30 to sign up and pay
the $3 registration fee.
Participants must be at least 10 years of age. This course will be
taught by Stacy Graff, an EMT and certified instructor / trainer for the
American Heart Association and the National Safety Council. To register for the class, sign up at the
St. John UCC church office, or contact Pastor David Riebeling or Pat Garleb at
the church office at 935-2240. Pat may
also be contacted at home at 935-2413.
Remember the first 30 persons paying their $3 fee will be guaranteed the
$27 training scholarship.
